Stop Stressing Yourself Out – Part 1: Pressure We Put On Ourselves
There are lots of external stressors in our lives like school, work, finances, etc. and these can add up to a heavy load for anyone to carry. But what about the internal stresses that we put on ourselves? These are pressures and expectations that we hold ourselves to that can add up to even more stress than some of the external factors that we face. Here are some of the internal stresses that we put on ourselves:
- Expectations of perfection. There is rarely anyone on the outside telling us that we need to be perfect – this pressure usually comes from within. We hold ourselves to impossible standards and beat ourselves up when we fail to meet them. We want to be the best at everything we do and this adds up to major stress put on ourselves. No one is perfect, so we are always bound to feel disappointed in our abilities to measure up. This means a constant stream of stress and pressure to always do more and try harder.
- Expectations of appearance. Blame it on the media and celebrities if you want, but we live in a world of unrealistic standards of what’s attractive. We never feel like we are thin enough, pretty enough, muscular enough, etc. which means we are under constant stress to look better and improve our appearance. We never feel good enough and this leads to stress and feelings of inadequacy.
